Week 1: Getting Started

Welcome to our eight-week seminar designed to assist you on your way to successful achievement of your goals. Most of you are here because you want to lose weight. We are proud of Herbalife's long history of promoting weight control based on principles of nutrition. There are literally hundreds of "diets" you hear and read about. Bookstores are full of the latest celebrities "claim-to-fame" books promoting their particular weight-loss methods.

Since 1980, Herbalife has helped millions achieve their weight-loss goals, while simultaneously providing balanced, complete nutritional supplementation.

Not only do people get great weight-loss results with Herbalife, but they get lasting results. Herbalife isn't a "quick fix" but rather a lifestyle choice. Are you ready to learn about our "tried-and-true" system?

We'll outline our ShapeWorks™ Weight-Management Program. We recognize that all people are not alike, therefore weight-control methods must be tailored to meet these needs. We have a system of products that begins with healthy soy protein shakes, allows you to eat from a wide variety of foods to lose weight steadily while feeling great! This is our ShapeWorks™ Quick Start, Advanced and Ultimate Weight-Management Program.

Our programs are based upon the revolutionary concept of Cellular Nutrition™, Herbalife's scientifically formulated vitamin, mineral and herbal supplements.

Research has confirmed there are many benefits of supplementation. Achieving optimum nutritional intake while decreasing calories is an essential aspect of weight-loss success. Week 2: Seeing Results/Changing Habits

Losing weight and feeling great!
You're into your second week on the ShapeWorks™ Success Program and feeling a surge of energy thanks to Cellular Nutrition™, Herbalife's exclusive nutritional approach that provides your body with the important nutrients it needs to function at its best. This week we address several important concerns that can affect you when you change your diet, whether the change is simply to reduce your caffeine consumption, increase your vegetable intake or begin the ShapeWorks™ Success Program for weight-management.

Overcoming the challenges of dietary adjustment.
Whenever you change your diet, it's natural for your body to go through a period of adjustment. This can be accompanied by physical symptoms, which may include headaches, constipation, diarrhea and hunger pangs. Herbalife's weight-management programs are designed to minimize the symptoms of dietary adjustment and provide you with natural herbal-based products that can ease the transition to a new way of eating, enhance your overall health and assist you in achieving your weight-loss goal. Let's look at some scenarios you may encounter as a result of changing your eating habits and what you can do for them.

What should I do if I get a headache on my weight-management program?
If you experience a headache as a result of dietary change it is likely to be caused by one of two things: inadequate fluid consumption or inadequate calorie intake. You'll be less likely to experience this if you drink at least six to eight glasses of water a day in addition to your shakes and other Herbalife beverages. You should use soy milk, rice milk, non-fat milk or juice to make your shakes. Be sure that your one meal includes a good serving of protein, such as chicken, fish or tofu, together with a green salad and vegetables. You may also need to include one additional snack per day. Good choices would be a ShapeWorks™ High-Protein, Low-Carb Protein Bar or ShapeWorks™ High-Protein, Low-Carb Roasted Soy Nuts with Cardia™ Salt.

What can I do about constipation or diarrhea?
Any change in your diet can bring about constipation, especially when your body is adjusting to fewer calories. If you experience constipation, it is important to increase your water consumption to at least eight glasses per day. In addition, take Aloe Vera drink after each meal to aid in digestion. This should help.

While dietary change may cause constipation in some, in others it can provoke diarrhea. If diarrhea is your concern, and you are using milk in your shakes, try switching to soy milk or rice milk. If you are using juice, try changing to another type-cranberry juice is a good option. Or use soy milk or plain yogurt in place of juice for a few days and then resume with your favorite juice once your system has adjusted.

What should I do when I get hungry on the program?
If you find you get hungry a few hours after your ShapeWorks™ Formula 1 Shake, add one additional tablespoon to your shake recipe instead of only 2. Or take another shake as snack. This hungry feeling is common if you've not been on meal-replacement products before and you body is not used to taking liquid food. After a week or two, you'll be accustom to the formula and feel full with the normal shake. Each serving of shake provides 15 grams of protein and only 70 to 80 calories. Powering up your shake with these extra serving will definitely help you feel more full. Adding the fiber products, such as Activated Fiber or taking some fruits can also decrease hunger.

Whatever challenges you may face as a result of adjusting your diet, Herbalife has a solution. Listen to your body and be sensitive to its needs. Most people find that by the end of the second week on the ShapeWorks™ Success Program any symptoms have cleared and they are feeling better than they have in months.  



Week 3: Activity/Exercise

Pump up your weight-loss success!
The message this week is: "Get active!" By now the great benefits of Cellular Nutrition™ are really starting to have an impact, and you're feeling energized and excited about your progress on the program. You're experiencing the kind of well-being and motivation you need to take your program to the next level. That means incorporating physical activity into your routine.

Forget the excuses
People complain "I don't have enough time" or "I'm too busy to exercise," but keeping your body active is one of the most important things you can do for your health-especially as you get older. Regular cardiovascular activity helps maintain muscle mass, promotes bone integrity, improves balance and mood, increases energy levels, reduces stress and helps you feel great. Of course, it can also speed up your weight-loss results.

Step into better health
No matter what your level of fitness, you can start to incorporate a little more exercise into your program. If you have not exercised in a while, begin with a simple activity such as walking for 10 to 15 minutes, three to four times a week. Gradually pick up the pace as you get stronger. See if you can extend the duration of your walk to half an hour or longer. When activity is sustained for 20 minutes or more, the body switches from primarily burning carbohydrates for fuel to burning stored fat. That's great news for weight loss! Other good physical activities include jogging, bicycle riding, rollerblading, swimming or even walking up the stairs and to the next bus-stop. Choose an activity that you like to do-that will help keep you interested and motivated to be active on a regular basis!

Muscle is an important asset-protect it!
Unless you stay active, your muscle tissue can start to atrophy as you age-a condition known as sarcopenia. To prevent this from happening, it's important to stay physically active and ensure you get enough protein in your diet. Herbalife's ShapeWorks™ Weight-Management Programs are designed to include plenty of high-quality soy protein to protect your muscle mass and support your overall health. Use the formula below to calculate the amount of protein your body requires daily. Then, if necessary, add extra tablespoon of Formula 1 powder to your daily shakes to boost your protein intake.

How much protein do you need?
For maintenance of lean muscle mass, the average person requires one gram of protein per kilogram of body weight. (To convert pound to kilograms, divide your weight in pounds by 2.2.) This is especially important during weight loss as your muscle mass helps determine your metabolic rate - the more muscle, the higher your metabolic rate!

Example: If you weigh 60 kilograms (or 132 pounds) your daily protein requirement will be approximately 60 grams.

(An athlete requires between 1.25 and 1.5 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight, depending on the number of hours of daily physical exertion).

Ease your joints
If physical activity tends to cause aches and pains for you, try Herbalife's popular Joint Support-Glucosamine with Herbs. It contains glucosamine sulfate to help cushion the cartilage between joints and MSM (methylsufonylmethane) to promote flexibility. Taken regularly, it can help ease joint pain and support your fitness program.

A small commitment makes a big difference
In addition to cardiovascular activity, add some stretching and abdominal crunches to your daily routine. Try to do three sets of 20 crunches each day. By the end of the eight-week program, you'll not only have created a positive habit, but you'll also see and feel the difference.

There's no better way to understand the impact of physical activity on your health and weight loss than to experience it. So get moving this week and have fun!



Week 4: Life Changing/Lifestyle Changing

The Emotional Aspects of Weight Loss
It's week four, the halfway point in our eight-week program and most of you will have lost 3 to 5 kilos (6 to 10 pounds) - Congratulations! Let's explore one of the most common "diet saboteurs" that can interfere with achieving success-emotional eating.

Changing habits, such as being on a weight-loss program, can be very stressful.
Changing habits is very difficult for humans - we like status quo. Whether we are cutting down on caffeine, trying to be more consistent with exercising or remembering to take Herbalife products three times per day, it can be hard to incorporate new habits into your lifestyle. Acknowledge that you are under some stress and give yourself a pat on the back as you make these changes a part of your everyday life. And if you forget to use your Herbalife products on occasion, just work harder to remember next time.

Develop ways to remind yourself to do the things that are good for you. Put your Herbalife tablet box in a visible place on your kitchen counter, or leave a note by the coffeemaker or your toothbrush to help you remember.
It is easier "not to" do something, but we can make changes! When you give yourself positive affirmations, you'll find yourself feeling more positive, and before you know it, you will be more successful! Try to avoid various situations or "triggers" that may get in the way of your success.

For example: Watching TV in the evening with all those food ads can be difficult. Be sure you have a healthy evening meal with a balanced serving of protein so you won't be hungry. Drink plenty of water after you eat - you'll be more in control!

If you find yourself really wanting an evening snack, have another Formula 1 shake. Pamper yourself a bit and try mixing a different flavour. For example, prepare a chocolate shake mix in four ounces of cold water and refrigerate for an hour - you'll think you're having chocolate pudding and it's only 55 calories.

Try to incorporate a bit of activity into your after-dinner hours, especially during the summertime when it is lighter longer.
Take the dog for a walk-you'll help your pup stay fit as well. Or go for a bicycle ride with your family and remember to wear your helmets! Are you hungry during the day? Feel free to take another tasty shake, your hunger will be a thing of the past. And be sure you are drinking plenty of water.

If you've been eating at a particular fast-food spot on the way home from work, change your driving route to avoid this temptation! Be a friend to yourself-this is the most important place to start!
For many women, cravings and appetite may increase the week before either their period or their menses (or both). There are things you can do to lessen this tendency. First of all, many studies suggest that adding calcium and magnesium can lessen the cravings that go along with PMS. So add Xtra-Cal to your Cellular Nutrition™ foundation. Tang Kuei Plus and Nature's Balance Cream (ask your Distributor about these products if you are new) can help your body find a better balance and may normalize some of these challenges associated with a woman's cycle.

Some people find journaling to be helpful or creating a "diet diary." This lets you talk to yourself on paper.
This approach is extremely helpful, especially if you are a "stress eater." Instead of eating through stressful situations, go to your journal and put your thoughts on paper.

Eating Triggers
There are many reasons why we overeat, but often we are "triggered" by something externally. It's these sudden impulses that can wreak havoc on our desire to lose weight-and keep it off. The best defense against eating triggers is knowledge. Once you are aware of what stimulates a craving, you can avoid those situations and make it easier to stick to your weight-loss goal. Here are some common eating triggers to keep in mind:

  • Television - Don't sit in front of the TV with food. We all know that a bag of chips disappears when sitting in front of the TV. The television must have eaten them! Right? Unfortunately, when you step on the scale the truth of who ate them will be evident.

  • Car - Don't eat in car for the same reasons as above.

  • Family dinner - Second helpings do count, so watch your portions.

  • Dinner at a friend's home - Talk to the host before arriving and explain about your healthy eating plan. This way you won't offend the host when passing on certain dishes or not taking seconds.

  • Party - Don't stand by food table. Fill yourself up with conversation instead.

  • Shopping - Always have a shopping list with you so you aren't tempted to stray from your healthy eating plan. Never go to the grocery store hungry. Shop the perimeter of the store where healthier food choices are usually on display. If at all possible, don't grocery shop with your children as stores target high-sugar and high-fat foods at their eye level. And always carry ShapeWorks™ Formula 1 shake mix and ShapeWorks™ Herbal Concentrate whenever you think you might be tempted to overeat or if you get hungry before a meal.

Now let's talk about those "external" saboteurs!
There are those around you who may intentionally or unintentionally get in the way of your success. It may be your spouse, a friend or coworker. Comments like, "You've tried so many diets. Why do you think this one will work?" or "You look fine just the way you are!"

Remember, you are using Herbalife products to help you lose weight and feel better about yourself. Not everyone around you may be able to deal with you taking charge of your life, your health and your weight! Be patient, but firm-this is for you! As you achieve good results, hopefully they will not only support you, but also join you on the pathway to improved health and nutrition!

Week 5: Herbalizing our Lives

Multicultural Weight Management
This week we turn our attention to our Spanish-speaking participants, as well as to several other ethnic groups, including the Orthodox Jewish community and African-American and Jamaican populations. We are honored to have Dr. Mario Rosenberg participating in the program. Dr. Rosenberg is a Beverly Hills gastroenterologist of Mexican descent who is the newest member of the Herbalife Medical Advisory Board.

Obesity is a major trend in all parts of the world.
The Western diet, which includes much "fast food," has permeated the daily diets of people around the globe. As a result, we are seeing similar trends of diseases that are related to obesity and diets high in fats and low in nutrient value. Among the most common are Type 2 diabetes, heart disease, cancer and kidney disease. It is conservatively estimated (by the U.S. Surgeon General and others) that 300,000 lives could be saved every year if we could "solve" the obesity epidemic!

Herbalife provides high-quality nutritional supplements to help customers of all ethnic backgrounds lose weight in a safe, healthy and effective way. Even five weeks into the program, we have some wonderful testimonials from our Hispanic community, many of whom have lost between 18 and 40 pounds. In general, people of Hispanic origin tend to have a somewhat higher incidence of obesity and therefore higher incidence of Type 2 diabetes. We also see these same trends in people of African descent, both in the United States as well as in Jamaica.

Jamaicans win with ShapeWorks™ Program 
Dr. Anthony Vendryes, a medical doctor from Montego Bay, Jamaica, sees great numbers of his patients prematurely developing Type 2 diabetes and coronary artery disease-as early as in their twenties. This week is about celebrating your success and reviewing the elements from the program that have been most helpful for you, so that you can maintain your weight loss or even lose more in the weeks to come if you need to.

The power of  recommitment
As you near your weight-loss goal, it can be tempting to slack off on your commitment. Don't. Even though you've reached week eight, now is the time to set your goal for the weeks ahead. If you still want to continue losing weight, set your sights on a new eight-week period and make a note of your goal for eight weeks from now. If you simply want to maintain, use the helpful tips in our "How to maintain, not regain" article.

Celebrate your losses
Remember the fat replicas on our week two and week seven shows? Think of each five pounds you've lost in terms of a whole shoebox worth of fat being gone from your body and celebrate!

Power up with protein
Whichever program you choose, you've learned how important it is to supply your body with good-quality protein daily to help maintain your muscle mass. Protein is filling and therefore makes appetite control easier. Protein is also thermogenic, which means it helps the body burn more calories because it is more difficult to digest than carbohydrates.
